It has a significant occurrence in elderly population due to factors that predispose this group, such as immunodeficiency due to advanced age. This work aimed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates from uncomplicated urinary tract infections in elderly patients, and to investigate the influence of self-medication behaviour in the bacterial resistant UTI. Community elderly patients, aged above 60 years and positive for urine culture in urinary tract down were included in the work. The samples were passed through sowing with 1µL calibrated loop, for bacterial isolation in EMB agar, Blood agar and Mac Conkey agar. The bacterial identification and susceptibility tests were performed according to CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute), </SPAN><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:metricconverter ProductID="2006. Statistical analysis was performed by Epi Info version 3.3.2. Preliminary studies of a sample of 80 elderly patients indicate 28 (35.0%) cases with confirmed UTI. The highest incident bacteria were <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Escherichia coli </I>and <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Klebsiella pneumoniae </I>with 12 (42.9%) and 7 (25.0%) cases, respectively. Regarding to susceptibility, the results showed that 20 (71.4%) isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial tested. The highest levels of resistance were observed with trimethoprim-sulfamethozale (TMP&shy;-SUL), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and gentamicine (GEN). There was a significant relationship between self-medication, using old prescriptions, and the bacterial resistance found in study group (p&lt;0.001). According to the parcial results obtained, there was a relevant level of resistance in the bacterial isolates from the UTIs in this group, probably influenced by the habit of self-medication. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></SPAN></P></font></p><br><b>Palavras-chave: </b>&nbsp;urinary tract infections, self-medication, resistance</td></tr></table></tr></td></table></body></html>
