Resumo:Bacterial resistance to antibiotics, that are used to treat infections, is a global concern, recognized as a threat by the World Health Organization (WHO). Resistant microorganisms cause severe infections, particularly affecting patients admitted to intensive care units, thus increasing the risks of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, research aimed at finding new alternatives to combat bacteria that cause infections is emerging, either by creating new drugs or by repositioning established drugs on the market for other purposes and even in natural products in bioprospecting. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the use of Isoniazid (ISO) in the fight against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, namely:Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538),Streptococcus mutans (UA 159), Escherichia coli (ATCC 11303) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 700603). The bacteria used are part of the bacteriotheque of the Nucleus of Bioprospection and Applied Molecular Experimentation of the University Center INTA - UNINTA. To evaluate the antibacterial activity of the ISO, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) procedures were performed through the broth microdilution method following the standard CLSI (Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, M07-A10), as well as the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). The results found demonstrate the antimicrobial potential of ISO, with values of 2,500 µg. mL-1 for MIC and CBM, against all tested strains. Furthermore, it was possible to verify an interference in its growth kinetics by the delay of the log phase and extension of the lag phase in the bacterial strains when exposed to MIC values of 0.5. Although ISO already has reports of antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, further studies are needed to elucidate its mechanism of action against other pathogens.
